Snowflake Bentley

Photographing snow in Vermont? Why would anybody do that? Wilson Bentley, a farmer living in Vermont, knew why: he saw a small miracle in each ice crystal. Beginning from when he was a boy until the end of his life, he strived to document the beauty and mystery of snowflakes through photography.

Bentley's story is brought to life through the words of Jacqueline Briggs Martin and the woodcuts of Mary Azarian. This delightful book gives children, and the young at heart, a glimpse into one who possessed a scientist's quest for truth and a poet's appreciation for beauty.

Snow Crystals

Anybody who has ever tried to photograph snow crystals knows how tricky the procedure is. Not only must the work be done rapidly in the extreme cold, but the light must be exactly right to reveal all the snowflake's nuances without producing heat. Yet Wilson Bentley, a farmer from Vermont, mastered this technique, as this book shows.

For nearly half a century, Bentley photographed thousands of snow flakes in his workshop in Jericho, Vermont. In 1931, the American Meteorological Society gathered together in one book the best of these photographs, along with W.J. Humphreys' essay describing the technique of photographing snow crystals and their classfication. That book is reproduced here, unaltered and unabridged, with over 2,000 beautiful crystals revealing the wonder of nature's diversity.
